BMGT 364 Week 7: Learning Activity
Traditionally theorist suggest that
the managerial function of controlling should not be confused with control in
the behavioral or manipulative sense. This function implies that managers
should not attempt to control or to manipulate the personalities, values,
attitudes, or emotions of their employees. Instead, this function of management
concerns the manager’s role in taking necessary actions to ensure that the
work-related activities of employees are consistent with and contributing
toward the accomplishment of organizational and departmental objectives.
Is it possible to manage without, in
some significant way, manipulating or controlling behavior?
NOTE: For this activity you will be forced
to argue for one perspective or the other. (Again, even if you do not
actually agree, you must argue for the position you have been assigned!)
If your last name begins with a
letter between A-H, you will present arguments that management does NOT involve
personality, values, attitude, and emotional manipulation.
If your last names beings with a
letter between K-Z, you will present arguments for why management DOES involved
personality, values, attitude, and emotional manipulation.
Again: last name A-H: management
does NOT involve manipulation
last name K-Z: management DOES involve manipulation
last name K-Z: management DOES involve manipulation
- Create an initial post by:
(a) defending the general premise,
according to your assigned perspective, that management does or does not
involve personality, values, attitude, and emotional manipulation (A-H:
management does not involve manipulation; K-Z: management does involve
manipulation)
(b) describing how effective
management can or cannot occur, depending on your assigned perspective, without
personality, values, attitude, and emotional manipulation (A-H: management can
occur without manipulation and how; K-Z: management cannot occur without
manipulation and how).
For this part of the activity you
must cite and reference at least three resources.
One initial post due by Thursday
11:59 p.m. EST.
- Respond to two classmates’ post by:
NOTE: You must respond to two
classmates who argued for the opposing perspective (i.e. if you have a
last name A-H and thus argued that management is not manipulative, you must
respond to a classmate with a last name K-Z who argued that it is, and vice
versa).
(a) discussing at least two
arguments made by that classmate for the opposing view that were convincing
(b) discussing at least two reasons
why the arguments made by the classmate were ineffective in convincing you of
their viewpoint
For this part of the activity you must
cite and reference at least two resources in each response.
